Textile history in a nutshell

Colour Trends in Pandemic Time

The virus as a powerful pre-emotion accelator.

For some time now, issues related to the environment, sustainability, consumerism, ethical injustice have questioned our existence and stimulated new forms of activism. We are entering the second season of the pandemic, suffering the disruptive effect of a virus that, where has not attacked us physically, has nevertheless deeply affected all our emotional, social and aesthetic experiences, bringing to light great anxieties and latent questions that now urgently require an answer.

Colour trends say who we are deep within

In the textile world we think of colours as values to be coded and reproduced to answer the first question of each new season: what will be the new trend? The anxiety of predicting makes us forget that colours, before being part of fashion and textiles, belong to ancestral experiences linked to the perception we have of ourselves and the world. We look at colours, we eat colours, we wear colours. Colours stir memories and trigger sympathies and antipathies, they are a part of the things we love or hate; the Ferrari is red, the mozzarella is white, the LBD (little black dress ) is black.
The instinctive and deep link with the civilization and personal life of each one, conveys colours a magical, almost divinatory power.

The divinatory power of colours

Colours feel in advance the spirit of our time and show it. Forecasting colours is in some ways similar to reading tarot cards: the questioner chooses the cards, the magician observes their combinations, considers the reciprocal influences and then formulates a prediction.
Similarly, those who make a colour trend (the so called colour cards) – use a mix of intuition and rationality to “find” the colours and after a hard work of looking and thinking, here are the trends as responses that tell of emerging aspirations, show new possibilities, stories that continue and stories that end.

The colour and the experience of the lockdown

The lockdown as a global and personal shock was a totally unpredictable experience: it changed our priorities and brought to the surface deep needs and desires that no marketing strategy could ever arise so quickly.
Thanks to their magical power, colours capture new existential trends and turn out to be a privileged tool for drawing the lines of the new beginning.

SOOTHE- KEEP- BREATHE- SAVE- MAKE

5 actions for 5 colour cards

SOOTHE

After the disasters of the pandemic, we wish to be looked after and comforted. Living as prisoners in our homes crowded with objects and concerns require peaceful and balanced atmospheres: as convalescents we need a moment of transition before throwing ourselves back into the turmoil of life’s desires. Colours: the family of not dazzling, NOT pure whites. Pearl grey, sky blue, pink , yellow , all in very pale and “therapeutic” tones.

KEEP

We used the lockdown to tidy up our wardrobe. Do I keep it or throw away? This moral and emotional question will become more and more important and the answer will determine the legacy of the future. The things we decide to keep and to pass on will become the icons of the future.
Colours: brown, grey, blue, khaki shades: softened, pre-loved, time -brushed

BREATHE

Breathing is a physical and mental action: during the lockdown we had hunger for air and nature, and when we could get out we rushed into the parks, woods and lawns: we hugged the trees as friends hug each other, we filled our lungs with wonderful fresh air.
Colours: green and water, what else?

SAVE

During the pandemic we experienced a very strong “need for salvation”. Unknown doctors and nurses became the new heroes, technology proved to be a magical tool to save human lives and relationships. Once fear is over, we will still need DIGITAL ANGELS as messengers of a transcendent and technological salvation.
Colours: anodized silver, very light lime, whitened fluo.

MAKE

Locked in our houses, to fight anxiety and boredom, we rediscovered the slow method of manual creativity, the pleasure of handmaking : modifying, repairing, inventing, mending, sewing, embroidering, scribbling. The impulse to rebuild the world also begins with the work of our hands.
Colours: red, indigo blue, terracotta, coal, sun.
